Journey Around São Miguel, Azores: A Photographic Adventure

After my wonderful trip to Photographic trip to Iceland earlier in the year, I had the lucky chance to travel again to another area of the Atlantic, in an attempt to come back with a series of photographs for my portfolio, where the islands have been shaped by volcanic activity. Exploring the verdant island of São Miguel in the Azores, I set off along the island’s ring road, eager to capture its natural beauty. The hydrangeas lining the roads added splashes of color to the lush landscape, which transitioned from moss-covered pine forests to dark sandy beaches.

Visiting the twin lakes of Sete Cidades was a highlight. From various viewpoints, including the peaceful shores of the lakes, the blue and green waters nestled in a volcanic crater were mesmerizing.

The island’s cloudy skies added a dramatic touch to the landscape, perfect for photography. Every snapshot captured a different mood, making São Miguel's beauty even more enchanting. Its a perfect spot to hike in with numerous hiking trails, so which i did a few.

A whale-watching tour from Vila Franca do Campo offered thrilling encounters with dolphins. Seeing these majestic creatures up close was a humbling experience.

While the island’s beauty was undeniable, I found the experience slightly underwhelming at times. The lush scenery and scenic lakes, though breathtaking, felt rather repetitive from a photographic perspective. However I wished I had more time to explore the beautiful woodlands.

Although I left somewhat disappointed and unsure of what didn’t hit the spot for me, my journey around São Miguel was still rewarding. The island’s unspoiled nature and tranquil atmosphere provided a refreshing escape. Each moment, from serene lakes to playful dolphins, was a reminder of nature’s simple, profound beauty. For anyone seeking natural discovery, I hope to share some of the few images I’m happy with from this beautiful place soon.
