Chasing the Northern Lights in Southern England: A Rare Spectacle
Living in the south of the UK, I never imagined I’d have the chance to witness the Northern Lights without traveling far north. But this year has been full of surprises, with an increase in solar activity making the aurora borealis visible across parts of the UK where it’s usually a rare sight. Of course, the experience has been weather-dependent, with the dreaded British cloud cover often threatening to obscure the view.
This week was incredible. After missing the stunning display in May, I was finally treated to a breath-taking sight just north of Bournemouth. Under a rare, clear sky, the Northern Lights appeared, painting the night with vibrant waves of green and pink. As if that weren’t magical enough, the pink glow of the aurora was accompanied by the Perseids meteor shower, with shooting stars streaking across the sky.
Watching the Northern Lights in a place I’ve always called home, while meteors fell overhead, felt like witnessing a small miracle. It was a reminder of nature’s unpredictable beauty and the thrill of capturing a moment you never expected to see in your own backyard.
Once I've had a chance to edit my photos I'll see if there is anything worthwhile posting as part of my portfolio.
