Exploring the Enchanting Beauty of Plitvice and Una National Parks: A Photographer's Perspective
October in the Balkans is a dream come true for nature photographers. Late fall paints the landscape with a palette of golds, oranges, and fading greens, creating a magical atmosphere. This year, I had the privilege attending my first photo tour to Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia and Una National Park in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was an experience of mixed emotions, a blend of discovery and reflection on the challenges of balancing personal and group exploration.
The Charm of Una National Park
Una National Park, often overshadowed by Plitvice, is a hidden gem. Its emerald rivers, dramatic waterfalls like Štrbački Buk, and quaint villages exude a raw, untamed beauty. The park feels more intimate, less touched by the hand of tourism, making it a photographer's haven.
Here, we had the unique opportunity to connect with locals—an experience I might have missed on a solo trip. From witnessing villagers distill local plums into rakia and joyfully sharing their creation, to a café owner proudly offering the region’s delicacies, including several shots of rakia, it was certainly the first time since my university days that I had multiple shots of neat spirit for breakfast! These interactions brought a special richness to our journey, adding depth and authenticity to the experience. Yet, I felt the constraints of time, wishing for more hours to explore and truly capture the essence of this remarkable park.
The Beauty of Plitvice Lakes National Park
Plitvice is a visual symphony, with tiered lakes cascading into one another in a harmonious dance of water and stone. The mist and rain in October added a layer of mystique, providing a still and wonderful experience for natural light. As the mist hung in the air, the autumn leaves took on a softer glow, casting reflections on the crystal-clear waters. The sound of waterfalls created a soothing backdrop, making it a paradise for photographers.
Walking along the wooden boardwalks, I found myself constantly stopping to frame shots of vibrant foliage against the turquoise lakes. However, as part of a group, time was limited at each location. While I longed to linger and wait for the perfect light or a fleeting wildlife moment, I also appreciated the camaraderie of my fellow travellers, who shared their perspectives and stories, enriching the experience.
The Duality of Group Photography Tours
Photography can often be a solitary pursuit, where one gets lost in the process of observing and capturing the world. But on this tour, the shared meals and exchanges of ideas brought a sense of community. Over breakfast, we discussed the day's itinerary, and during dinner, we swapped stories of missed shots and unexpected successes.
The trade-off was the structure of the tour. Certain locations begged for longer stays, and the creative process sometimes felt rushed. Still, the connections made and the shared enthusiasm for photography were priceless.
Reflections on the Journey
It reminded me that travel and photography are as much about the journey and the people we meet as the images we capture. Plitvice and Una in late October offered an unparalleled feast for the eyes, and the group dynamic added a richness I hadn’t anticipated.
For anyone considering a photo tour, my advice is to embrace the structure while finding moments for personal creativity. These parks are worth every minute, and the shared experience can make the journey even more memorable. Whether you're a seasoned photographer or just starting, the fall colours and serene beauty of these national treasures are sure to inspire.
