Slipping Out at Sunrise: Chasing a Shot Over Palma Cathedral
There is a special kind of thrill in waking up before your partner on holiday, quietly slipping out of the hotel room and venturing into a city still half asleep. It feels a bit like stealing time, like borrowing a moment from the world before anyone else notices it is missing. And on this trip to Palma, that borrowed moment was all about one thing: catching sunrise over the cathedral.
Palma Cathedral is impressive at any hour, but at dawn it becomes something else entirely. The stillness of the streets, the soft pink light beginning to wash over the sandstone, the harbour gently waking up, everything slows down. You feel like the city is letting you in on a secret.
But before any of that magic happens, there is the quiet shuffle of getting ready in the dark. The awkward search for your camera bag without turning on a light. The careful click of the door so you do not wake the person who is still happily asleep, wrapped in hotel sheets. There is a sweetness to that moment, too. You are off on your little mission, knowing you will be back later with a photo and a story, and maybe even a coffee for them.
Walking through Palma at sunrise is an experience in itself. The warm air carries the scent of the sea, the pavements are still cool, and the city’s usual buzz is replaced by footsteps and the occasional cyclist. And then, as you turn the corner and see the cathedral rising above the water, it hits you: this was worth the early start.
The first light catches the façade slowly, brushing over the flying buttresses and settling on the honey coloured stone. The reflection in the lake below begins to form. The sky shifts from soft blue to pastel amber. And for those few minutes, you forget the effort it took to get here. You simply breathe, frame, and shoot.
And then comes the second best part of the morning: walking back through the waking city, knowing a fabulous breakfast awaits. Fresh pastries, strong coffee, maybe something local and indulgent, all enjoyed with the warm satisfaction that you have already captured something special before most people have even opened their curtains.
By the time you return to your partner, the day feels full of possibility. The light is bright, the city is alive and you have a fantastic day ahead, built on the quiet joy of a morning well spent. Photography gave you the moment, but the holiday gives you everything after it, and together they make the perfect start.
